Tree pollen from late March through May forms a fine uniform yellow-green film that dulls the entire panel surface at once. Leaf and seed debris lodge along the bottom edge of a panel where the frame creates a lip, then hold moisture and build organic growth in that strip. Bird droppings are the most damaging per square inch because they are opaque point sources — on many string systems, shading part of a single cell can drag down performance disproportionately. Sap and honeydew under canopy in Gladwyne, Haverford and Wynnewood are sticky and catch everything that lands afterward. Rain does not solve this — rain removes loose dust and leaves a mineral film behind as it dries.

How Panels Get Cleaned Properly

Deionized water, no detergent. Purified water lifts soiling and dries without leaving mineral residue. Soft brush on a pole or water-fed pole — contact is gentle and the anti-reflective coating on the glass is the surface being protected. No pressure washing, ever: force can breach the panel frame seal and drive water into the junction box or under the laminate. Nobody walks on the array: standing on panels causes microcracks in the cells that do not show visually and do show in production data months later. Cool panels only: cold water on hot glass risks thermal shock.

When to Book

After pollen season, late May into June, is the highest-value single visit for most Main Line homes. It clears the year's heaviest film right before the strongest production months. Fall after leaf drop is the second choice and it matters more if your array is under canopy and collecting debris along the panel edges.
