A residential array loses output as soiling accumulates on the glass, and in this region the soiling is seasonal and heavy: a thick spring pollen load from oak and pine, summer dust, and fall tannin and leaf litter on arrays with any tree exposure. Bird droppings are the worst offender because they are opaque and localized, and a single shaded cell can drag down the string it sits in.
Cleaning is straightforward and the constraint is access. Walking a roof to reach an array risks the roof and the panels both, and panel glass has an anti-reflective coating that abrasive cleaning ruins permanently. We rinse the panels with tap water, wash them with soap, and finish with deionized water that takes the soap off and dries without spots. The drone does all three, so nobody stands on your roof.
A home array of 30 to 60 panels takes 1 to 2 hours, from the time we arrive to the time we leave. That covers setup, the cleaning by drone, and packing up. In September 2026 we cleaned an array above a garage in Deptford, NJ, with the water hose tethered to the drone from the driveway.
Why we finish with deionized water
Tap water in this area carries dissolved minerals. Let it dry on hot panel glass and you get spotting. You have traded organic soiling for mineral soiling. So tap water and soap do the cleaning, and deionized water does the last rinse. It has the minerals stripped out, so it dries without residue and needs no squeegee.
The final rinse also takes the soap off. Soap left on the glass dries to a film that pollen and dust stick to faster than they stick to clean glass. A full deionized rinse leaves nothing behind for the next pollen load to catch on.
Abrasives are the third. Panel glass carries an anti-reflective coating that is thin and not replaceable. Scrubbing pads, scouring, and high-pressure impingement all damage it, and the damage is permanent output loss.

Array and output review
We look at the array layout, tilt, and surroundings, and ask what your monitoring shows. If output is down for a reason cleaning will not fix, we would rather tell you than take the job.
Debris clearing
Loose leaf litter, nesting material, and larger debris cleared from the panel edges and the gap beneath the array before any water is applied.
Rinse and soap wash
Tap water at low pressure by drone takes off the loose pollen and dust. A soap wash then loosens bird droppings and the sticky film from trees. No abrasive contact, nobody standing on the roof or leaning a ladder on the array frame.
Deionized final rinse
Deionized water rinses the soap off. It evaporates without leaving mineral deposits, so the glass dries clear on its own with no squeegee pass required.

How long does solar panel cleaning take?
1 to 2 hours for most homes with 30 to 60 panels, from arrival to departure. Larger arrays, or panels split across several roof faces, take longer.
How much production will cleaning actually recover?
It depends entirely on how soiled the array is. A lightly dusty array in open sun recovers very little and probably is not worth a service call. An array under trees with a spring pollen load and bird droppings is a different conversation. Check your monitoring against the same month last year before booking, because that comparison is the honest test.
Will you void my solar warranty?
What damages panels is walking on them, pressure washing them, and scrubbing them with abrasive pads. We do none of those. Send us your installer's maintenance guidance, including which soaps it allows, and we will work to it.
How often should panels be cleaned here?
Once a year for most residential arrays in southeastern Pennsylvania, timed for late spring after the oak and pine pollen has finished. Arrays with heavy tree exposure or a recurring bird problem do better on a twice-yearly schedule.
Can rain not just do this?
Rain handles loose dust reasonably well. It does not remove pollen film, bird droppings, or the sticky residue tree canopy leaves behind, and on a low-tilt array it can leave a tide line of concentrated soiling at the bottom edge of each panel.
Do you need access to my roof or attic?
No. The whole job is done from outside the structure. We need a clear staging area on the ground and your permission to fly, and that is it.
