A pool deck is the one hardscape people walk on barefoot and run across wet, which makes biological film on the surface a safety problem before it is a cosmetic one. It is also a surface with a lot of material variety: travertine, stamped concrete, exposed aggregate, brick coping, and composite decking all show up on properties in this area, and none of them clean the same way.
We clean the deck, the coping, the steps, and the surround, and we handle the transition to the waterline carefully so nothing ends up in the pool that your chemistry has to fight.
What builds up around a pool in this climate
Three separate things accumulate. Biological film, meaning algae and mildew, grows anywhere the deck stays damp, which around a pool is most of it. Mineral scale from splash-out builds a chalky white deposit on coping and the first foot of deck. And organic debris from surrounding trees leaves tannin staining, worst on the shaded side.
Travertine and stamped concrete both complicate matters. Travertine is porous and calcium-based, so aggressive acid cleaning eats the stone while removing the scale. Stamped concrete relies on a sealer coat, and high pressure will take the sealer off and leave the color coat exposed and blotchy.
Closing week and opening week are the two right times to do this. Closing, so a season of sunscreen residue and organic material does not sit on the deck all winter. Opening, so the surface is safe before the first weekend anyone uses it.

Travertine, stamped concrete, exposed aggregate, and composite each get different pressure and chemistry. We check whether stamped surfaces still have an intact sealer before touching them.

Pre-treatment for biological growth, then cleaning at material-appropriate pressure. Coping and scale handled separately from the deck field.

We walk the wet deck barefoot before we call it done. If a section is still slick, it gets treated again.

Pool Deck Cleaning questions
Will cleaning damage my travertine coping?
Not with the right approach. Travertine is calcium-based and porous, so strong acid removes the scale and some of the stone with it. We use a gentler chemistry with more dwell time, and accept that heavy long-standing scale may lighten rather than vanish entirely.
Does anything get into the pool?
We cover skimmers and direct rinse away from the water. A small amount of overspray is unavoidable on the coping. It is dilute and will not disrupt your chemistry, but test the water afterward as you normally would.
Can you clean stamped concrete?
Yes, at low pressure. Stamped concrete depends on its sealer, and high pressure lifts the sealer and leaves the color coat blotchy. If the sealer is already failing we will tell you, because cleaning will make that obvious and the deck will want resealing afterward.
When is the best time to clean a pool deck?
At closing or at opening. Closing is slightly better, because it stops a full season of sunscreen residue and organic debris from sitting on the surface through the winter freeze-thaw cycle.
Do you clean the pool itself?
No. We do the deck, coping, surround, steps, and any adjacent patio or retaining wall. Water chemistry and interior surfaces are your pool service's job.
