A short walk-around in good light tells you whether you are dealing with pollen alone or pollen plus something that has already started growing underneath it.

  1. Wipe test. Run a finger down a shaded siding panel. Loose yellow dust that lifts cleanly is pollen. A film that smears green or leaves a stain behind is algae, which needs a different treatment.
