Expect a wall to need a second, lighter pass rather than one aggressive one. Established growth in porous stone rarely surrenders in a single application, and the temptation to escalate pressure on the second attempt is exactly where damage happens.

- Aggressive pressure. The single largest cause of avoidable damage. High-pressure water aimed at a joint is a mortar removal tool, and on old lime joints it works quickly.

- Wire brushing. It polishes and scratches stone faces and tears out joint material.
- Saturation. Prolonged flooding drives water into the wall assembly. Stone walls in this region are frequently solid masonry with no cavity, so what goes in has to come back out through the same joints.
- Working in freezing conditions or when a freeze is coming. Water in a saturated joint that then freezes expands, and the joint loses.
- Rushing a repointed wall. Fresh repointing needs weeks to cure before it sees cleaning chemistry or pressure.

Stone homes in this area tend to sit on lots that complicate access, which is worth planning around before the day of work.
Estate-scale properties in Haverford and Gladwyne have wooded, sloping ground and outbuildings, so the far elevation of the house is often the one that cannot be reached with a truck or a ladder set safely.
